In this the second prequel of the McKenna Chronicles, Morgan and Amy have done what Morgan swore he would never do. They have left the northern river life of logging camps and moved South to Dooley, Georgia, to try farming with Morgan's brother, Kevin; with Eli Brett, and their families.
This is the story of the years in Dooley leading up to when the Old House Bunch is established.
Through unexpected tragedies, with blissful young love and the chaos of raising children, the extended McKenna family establishes itself in the hills of Southern Appalachia. Did Morgan instill enough of his tough love in his children; did Amy's mothering under gird them with enough confidence to continue into adulthood?
Only time will tell.

I could not read “Watching the Land” quickly, but enjoyed a steady diet of twenty to thirty pages a night. The novel is a character study of a large and an extended family in the North Georgia mountain area. The love, the disappointments, the temptations, the petty arguments between family members, the respect for family, the love for the land- all these are well narrated. The author has an emotional attachment and understanding for each character as she gently crafts the novel. The twenty or so characters reveal their personalities in a well-managed revelation.
The novel is not saccharine, but does well to maintain the high road when depicting real life situations in a small town. Situations are presented such as the “quiet” tavern/brothel with the drinking and card games, the seduction scene of a promiscuous young lady seeking approval in life- but the overall moral high ground of good people getting through life by keeping their faith is the overriding atmosphere. The author’s familiarity with each person in the novel increased my empathy for each situation.
The television miniseries Lonesome Dove mesmerized readers as Augustus and Woodrow made their journey. The 1985 novel, written by Larry McMurtry, created characters readers understood and cheered. Mr. McMurtry wrote about ancestors with an honesty. Heidi Peaster does the same thirty years later.
I wish some celebrity currently had a talk show that would publicize a book of the month. Heidi’s work would be in contention.
